Austria: the vignette goes fully digital on 1 February 2027

The Austrian sticker vignette is living its final months. The 2026 issue, fiery red (« feuerrot »), is the last physical vignette ASFINAG will produce: from 1 February 2027 only the digital vignette, tied to the number plate, will be valid. Roughly three quarters of annual vignettes are already digital, and the network of some six thousand physical sales points disappears with the sticker.

What actually changes

Nothing on price: the durations and official rates remain those on our Austria page, verified against the ASFINAG source. What changes is the medium: nothing to stick on the windscreen, nothing to scrape off, no fine for a badly applied vignette. The digital vignette is bought online and applies immediately to the plate you declare.

The cooling-off trap

One point deserves attention: bought online by a private individual, the digital vignette only becomes valid after the European fourteen-day cooling-off period — unless you buy at a sales point or expressly waive that right where the option is offered. If you are leaving tomorrow, check this at the moment of purchase on the official portal. This is precisely what unofficial resellers trade on, charging « express » surcharges that buy you nothing if you plan ahead.
