Bulgaria: the vignette switches to the euro

Bulgaria has adopted the euro, and its electronic vignette has followed: prices are now quoted in euros. For anyone driving through, little changes in practice — the vignette stays electronic and tied to the number plate — but the amounts circulating online are no longer all correct.

Why you keep meeting outdated prices

A currency changeover leaves traces. Comparison sites, forums and even official pages that have not been updated still show amounts in leva, sometimes converted at the wrong rate, sometimes simply copied from before the switch. Start from one of those and you will either overpay a reseller or budget for less than the price actually is.

Which source is binding

Only the official purchase counts. Current prices are on our Bulgaria page, with their verification date and the address of the source they were read from. Where doubt remains, the state portal decides — not a comparison site, and certainly not a reseller charging a « service fee ».

Bulgaria applies a compensatory charge payable within fourteen days, which closes the case; fail to pay it and the full fine follows. The official amounts are on the page about driving without a vignette.
