Croatia: tolls move to free-flow

Croatia currently settles on a closed toll system: take a ticket on entry, pay on exit according to the distance driven. In peak season that produces the familiar queues at the toll plazas, especially on the A1 towards Split. The announced switch to free-flow is meant to end that: gantries reading number plates replace the barriers, and nobody stops.

What it changes for you

For your wallet: nothing directly. Croatia is not introducing a vignette — you still pay by distance, as our Croatia page explains. What changes is the payment: registering in advance, or settling after the journey on the basis of your plate, instead of cash or card at the exit.

What it demands of you

Under free-flow the responsibility sits with the driver: there is no barrier to remind you. An unpaid crossing becomes a fine, and it reaches a foreign plate through cross-border exchange of registration data. Expect something to settle after the trip, even if nobody stopped you on the way.

What stays the same

The Učka Tunnel and the bridges with their own price keep their separate charge. And if you drive through Slovenia, you do need a vignette there: the e-vinjeta is compulsory from the first motorway kilometre.
